Why owning just one of the right thing often brings more joy than having many. We don’t need more—we just need what truly suits us.
Sometimes, I catch myself scrolling through Instagram or walking past someone on the street—and suddenly, I want what they have.
That jacket. Those shoes. That sleek watch.
And before I know it, I’m looking it up online, imagining how it might look on me.
But here’s the thing:
I already own something just like it.
In fact, I own too many versions of the same thing—
a drawer full of barely worn watches, jackets I forgot I even had, shoes still in boxes.
So I started asking myself a different question:
“If I buy this, what happens to the one I already have?”
Do I give it away? Let it sit unused?
Or worse, feel guilty every time I see it?
That pause is powerful.
It reminds me:
The best things are the ones I already love.
If I truly love it, why replace it?
That’s when I made a personal rule:
Just one of each—only the best, only what fits me.
Sure, sometimes the best thing costs more.
But saving up for what I really want has saved me more money (and regret)
than buying a bunch of “good enough” substitutes I never really used.
Since then, every item I own feels more meaningful.
I don’t own more—but I value what I have more deeply.
Each piece reflects a choice I made with care, not impulse.
And honestly, I feel lighter. Clearer.
I’m no longer pulled by what others buy, post, or wear.
Because I’ve found what fits me—not just in size, but in life.
So here’s a habit that changed my spending:
Before you buy something, ask:
“Is this the one thing that truly fits me?”
If it is, go for it—own it proudly.
If it’s not, walk away without regret.
Because choosing less, on your terms,
often brings more peace than anything money can buy.
What’s one item you own that truly reflects you—something you’d choose again and again?
I’d love to hear what it is, and how you decided it was the one.
