Smart Money 101: The Student Loan Shutdown — Why IDR Plans Vanished and What You Can Still Do

Is this crash part of Trump and Musk’s long-term economic plan? Discover how to protect and grow your money during market volatility.

No SAVE, No PSLF, No Mercy—What the Federal Freeze Means for Millions of Borrowers Like You and Me

A young woman sitting at a desk, looking stressed as she stares at her laptop and scattered student loan bills, reflecting financial frustration.

Imagine this: You finally get your budget together, cut back on takeout, and get ready to submit your IDR application—maybe the SAVE plan. And just as you’re about to hit "Submit"? The government hits pause.
All IDR plans. Gone.

That’s exactly what happened last week.

So What Happened?

A federal court blocked the SAVE plan after lawsuits from Republican-led states.
But instead of freezing just SAVE, the Department of Education shut down ALL IDR applications, including PAYE, IBR, and ICR.
That’s like closing every road in town because one pothole was reported.

According to The New York Times (Feb. 28, 2025):

“A federal court ruling expanded an injunction on the SAVE plan, forcing the Department to halt all IDR applications.”

Worse, The Washington Post (March 1, 2025) noted:

“The removal of IDR applications was not mandated by the court. The Department made the choice.”

Which means: the decision to cancel everything was optional.

Why This Hurts Even More: No IDR = No PSLF

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) requires an active IDR plan. So if you were planning to qualify, you’re stuck.
This isn’t just a technical issue—it’s a major financial setback.

I was just about to switch to SAVE to lower my monthly payments. Now? I get to wait. And worry.

How Long Will This Last?

According to CNBC (March 2, 2025):

“Internal memos suggest the IDR processing freeze could last at least three months.”

Three months of no new applications, no switching plans, no clarity. And once the freeze lifts? Expect massive backlogs.

What Can You Do Right Now?

If You’re Already in an IDR Plan:

  • Do nothing. Stay where you are.

  • Check recertification dates—those may also be paused.

If You’re Not Enrolled Yet:

  • Call your loan servicer. Ask about forbearance, deferment, or temporary payment adjustments.

  • Confirm if PSLF-qualifying payments are still counting.
